Maybe they should just make a second golden ball. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will contest the Ballon D’Or at the end of the year and on Sunday night, in a battle for Spanish supremacy, the result was a tie.They now have 100 goals between them this calendar year. Both scored with their first shots on goal and both added second goals in the second half as the clasico lived up to its name once more with a 2-2 draw.

Barca and Real might not like each other very much, but they make a lovely couple. 

Ronaldo drew first blood here, becoming the first player ever to score in six consecutive clasicos on 22 minutes when he beat Victor Valdes at his near post. 

It was a goal straight from the Barcelona manual with Xabi Alonso, Mesut Ozil, Marcelo and Sami Khedira all exchanging passes before Karim Benzema’s assist to Ronaldo. 

His 13th goal in his past 11 games took him one ahead of Messi in the league - but only for eight minutes.

Andres Iniesta played the ball out to Pedro and when his cross hit Alonso, the Real Madrid player got himself tangled up with Pepe and as neither cleared Messi pounced to score from close range. 

First blood: Ronaldo struck the first blow when he unleashed a fierce drive inside the near post

Madrid had never lost in the league with Ronaldo scoring; Barcelona likewise when Messi strikes. That record was to remain standing at the end.

Barcelona started the stronger of the two sides in the second half. 

Back on terms: It didn't take long for Messi to haul his side back on level terms from close range...

...but Real Madrid cried foul after Pepe ended up on his backside in the build up to the equaliser

Pepe poked the ball away from Iniesta and as the midfielder tumbled over inside the area there were appeals for a penalty that were correctly waved away by the referee. 

Ronaldo led the counter-charge and Sergio Busquets was carded for clipping his heels. The Portuguese hit his free-kick into the wall.  

Big claim: There were several penalty shouts waved away, notably when Andres Iniesta hit the deck after the break

After 15 minutes of the second period, his Argentine nemesis had his chance from a similar distance and left Iker Casillas flapping in the wind: 2-1. 

Ronaldo tried and failed with a bicycle kick as Real Madrid pushed forward for the equaliser. 

Stunning: Messi produced the goal of the night when he shaped a glorious freekick up and into the net

Once again it looked as if the only man capable of outdoing the Portuguese was going to do just that, but then, with 66 minutes played, Ronaldo pulled Real level. 

Ozil was the creator, threading a through ball that Ronaldo raced on to before slotting low past Valdes. 

‘Anything you can do, I can do just as well,’ seemed to be the message.
