Shinyanga Regional Cooperative Union (1984) Ltd (SHIRECU) has vowed to continue buying cotton from framers at 1,100/- per kilo despite its fall in price on the world market.
SHIRECU chairman Robert Jongela told this paper that the aim was to encourage farmers to continue cultivating the crop. He said the region’s cotton buying season started on June 20, this year.
He said despite the fall of the cotton price on the world market where it was now fetching USD 98.63 cents per kilo, the union would not buy cotton at a price less than 800/- a kilo.
Meanwhile, SHIRECU acting general manager Joseph Mihangwa has said that the union would continue buying cotton at reasonable prices. He said a recent meeting between SHIRECU, Tanzania Cotton Growers Association(TACOGA) and the Tanzania Cotton Board (TCB) had agreed to continue buying cotton according to prevailing world market prices.
Mihangwa said since the beginning of the cotton buying season, they had managed to buy a total of 4.7 million kgs of cotton in its nine zones. He said the SHIRECU zone in Muhunze area had surpassed the target whereby it bough 9.5 million kgs while the target was to buy 1.5 million kilos.
He named the other zones that had performed well as Sola, Luguru, Bukombe, Kahama, Malampaka, Meatu and Uzogore.
He named other cotton buyers in Shinyanga region as Kahama Cotton Company Ltd (KCCL), which bought 5.7 million kilos, and SNC Ginnery Company, which bought 4.8 million kgs.
Last week, Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda told the National Assembly that a decrease in the cotton price on the world market was caused by bumper harvests in India, Pakistan, China, Brazil and the US. The premier was responding to a question from Sumve lawmaker Richard Ndasa.
