Chadema`s Slaa, five other accused absent from court

Chadema`s Slaa, five other accused absent from court

22nd January 2011
CHADEMA Secretary General Dr Wilbroad Slaa

CHADEMA Secretary General Dr Wilbroad Slaa was among six people facing charges of unlawful procession who did not appear at the Arusha Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday during mention of the case.
Dr Slaa and five other people, including his fiancée, Josephine Mushumbusi, failed to appear before the court for what their advocate, Method Kimomogoro, described as health complications associated with the January 5 scuffle with the police.
The rally, in Arusha city, two weeks ago turned sour with three people being killed after the party’s members and supporters clashed with the police.
He told the court that Dr Slaa and Josephine failed to appear before the court because they were recovering at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI), after being operated on.
The advocate presented a medical accreditation to prove that Dr Slaa and Josephine were admitted to MOI.
Kimomogoro further told the court that other defendants like Dadi Gogo, Juma Wambura, Elisante Noel and Michael Kimario failed to appear before the court because they were unable to walk due to the bullet injuries they sustained during the scuffle.
However, Resident Magistrate Charles Magesa ordered that the four accused should submit medical certificates during the next mention to show that they are still sick.
Public prosecutor Zakaria Elisaria told the court that two out of the 31 defendants were set free by the police in Arusha, bringing to 29 the number of accused.
He also said investigations were yet to be completed, requesting the court to adjoin the case. The magistrate granted the request, setting the mention for February 22.
According to the charge sheet on January 5, this year, Chadema party leaders, members and supporters held a public rally in the country’s leading tourism city without permission from the police.
State Attorney Augustine Kombe said in so doing, the leaders and their supporters breached the Police Force Ordinance.
The accused include the party’s national chairman, Freeman Mbowe, who is MP for Hai; Secretary-general Dr Wilbroad Slaa and chief of protocol Bazil Lema.
Three other party’s MPs in the list of accused are Philemon Ndesamburo (Moshi-Urban), Joseph Selasini (Rombo) and Godbless Lema (Arusha-Urban).
Others are party members Josephine (Mushumbusi) Slaa, Derick Magoma, Richard Mtui, Acquilene Chuwa, Proches Kimario, Nai Stephen, John Raymond, Juma Samwel Wambura and Dady Igogo.
Also in the list are Kennedy Bundala, Esebio Akaro, Bakari Issa, Elisante Noel, Kelvin Onyango, Michael Daudi, Prosper Kimaro, Peter Marua, Frank Logath, Matheus Valerian and Walter Mushi.
The state is also accusing Pancras Kimario, Swalehe Salum, Mevongori Lukumay and Daniel Titus of taking part in the illegal protest.

JK launches fundraiser for UDSM resource centre

22nd January 2011
President Jakaya Kikwete

President Jakaya Kikwete on Thursday formally launched a fundraising campaign for the construction of the University of Dar es Salaam Student Resource Centre injecting 1.4bn/- in cash and pledges into the kitty which now has 2.3bn/-.
The University community and staff who floated the 17bn/- project to mark the 50th anniversary of the institution have already collected 1.2bn/-.
Fundraising for the centre was made in a mark of committed support to Tanzania’s oldest higher learning institution.
“This is a case for support, and the existing infrastructure at UDSM does not augur well with 21st century challenges. Students still sit on concrete made stools popularly referred to as ‘Madegree’ or a new innovative word ‘vimbweta’ whose meaning I cannot even comprehend. So when I was approached to contribute towards the noble idea and grace the launch of the project, I did not hesitate to give the nod,” said President Kikwete.
Speaking at the ceremony held at State House grounds in Dar es Salaam, the President said no meaningful development in the country could be achieved without education.
“UDSM was established two months before the then Tanganyika attained its independence, the growth and development of the University of Dar es Salaam mirrors the development of independent Tanzania,” he said, scoffing at those who claim the country have made no strides in the sector.
“There were only 13 students in 1961 and currently we speak of 17,000 students in the main campus. This is no little achievement,” he added.
President Kikwete pledged his personal contribution of 10m/- towards the noble cause while his friends supported him with a 1bn/- donation.
The fundraising was attended by among other dignitaries, Ambassadors Alfonso Leinhardt of United States of America (USA) and Bjarne Sorensen of Denmark; Governor of Bank of Tanzania (BoT), Professor Benno Ndulu, Ministers, and prominent businessmen.
In his remarks the UDSM Vice Chancellor Prof Rwekaza Mukandala said over 80 per cent of students at the main campus live off campus; some in hostel facilities located outside the campus while others stay in privately arranged rooms impacting negatively on their studies.
“Alarming challenges facing these off-campus students Mr President, and to a lesser extent their colleagues, is acute shortage of space for daytime study, relaxation and recreation,” said Prof Mukandala.
He said the centre is both a physical and a virtual location or place designed to facilitate, among other things, students’ access to information about programmes and events, to group or collective amenities and facilities.
According to VC Mukandala the centre is supposed to provide space for work, leisure, relaxation and a more reflective and productive thinking, which is a focal point for community life at the University.
Retired Prime Minister and a long time alumni of UDSM who doubles as the president of the graduates community, Joseph Sinde Warioba said the need for a students’ centre was long overdue.
“There is no places for students to study, do their assignments, access internet, eat, reflect and rest due to expanded enrolment,” said Warioba.
He called upon well-wishers and the general public to contribute bountifully towards the project for the betterment of the future generation.

MBUNGE Nyalandu akabidhi matrekta wakulima singida

Jumamosi, 22, January 2011

Thin crust pizzas can be 'unhealthy'

Laden with fat, saturated fat and salt, consumer watchdog finds

Thin crust pizzas may not be the health option
© Liveshot - Fotolia.com
Eating a thin crust or fresh pizza may not be a healthier option, a study has found.
Deep-pan, stuffed crust and frozen pizzas can contain less fat, saturated fat, salt and calories than the thin crust varieties which are often assumed to be healthier.
Experts from the consumer watchdog Which? analysed the nutritonal content of 162 cheese and tomato and pepperoni pizzas available in the major supermarkets and take-away chains in the UK.
They found that thin pizzas could be higher in fat and saturated fat than the deep pan and stuffed crust versions. Tesco’s Italian Romana Margherita, which has an "ultra thin" base, was found to contain twice as much fat and saturated fat per 100g as its Trattoria Verdi Deep Pan Cheese pizza.
Frozen supermarket pizzas also tended to be healthier than fresh ones. Morrison's frozen Thin and Crispy Pepperoni pizza contained less fat, calories and salt than its fresh Thin and Crispy Pepperoni pizza.
And supermarket pizzas weren’t always healthier than those from take away chains. Gram for gram, Dr Oetker’s Chicago Town Edge to Edge Thin & Crispy California Cheese contained more fat and saturated fat than any of the cheese and tomato options, including those from Domino’s and Pizza Hut.
Pizzas with the same topping could contain up to three times more fat and salt, depending on the brand. Sainsbury’s fresh Basics Cheese & Tomato pizza had 5g of saturated fat per 100g, while Tesco’s fresh Full-on-Flavour Cheese Feast Deep Crust Pizza had 14g.
Which? also found an "enormous and often unrealistic" range of portion sizes and different front-of-pack nutrition labelling schemes, even by the same manufacturer.
Goodfella’s and Chicago Town were among the worst offenders for portion size, according to Which?, as they suggested that people eat a quarter of a pizza which the consumer watchdog considered unlikely. Some supermarket own-brand pizzas were also guilty of doing this.
Which? chief executive Peter Vicary-Smith said: “You can’t expect people to stand poring over pizza labels in the supermarket to see which one has more fat or salt in it.
"We want clear, front-of-pack labelling, including traffic light colours, and consistent portion sizes so people can easily compare like with like.”

FAO advocates policies on employment for rural youth

21st January 2011
Food and Agricultural Organisation

The Food and Agricultural Organisation has called on Tanzania to seriously implement policies which support rural employment, specifically in agriculture, for equitable and sustainable livelihood in order to eliminate acute youth rural-urban migration.
FAO Country Representative Louise Setshwayo said this on Wednesday in Dar es Salaam at the official launching of a workshop on Food and Agriculture.
Setshwayo said the government, through the project, has to implement agriculture since it will boost rural development and make youths employ themselves.
“As a large segment of manpower resides in rural areas, it is of paramount importance to create work opportunities there through empowering youths,” he said.
The representative said further that many youths in rural areas were facing ruthless life which forces them to migrate to urban areas.
“Some 300 million youths work worldwide and only earn less than USD 2 a day,” said Setshwayo.
She added such youths in rural areas are employed in the informal sector and in unpaid family works especially in agriculture.
Speaking on behalf of the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, director of research and development in the ministry, Fidelis Myaka, said Tanzania directs part of its resources to support rural development in agriculture so as to alleviate rural poverty.
“The government uses its resources to achieve quality agriculture through conducive environment, capacity building of farmers and facilitate private sectors to support the rural farming societies,” said Myaka
He analyzed critical challenges facing rural development such as overdependence on rain-fed agriculture, poor storage, communication and transport facilities, low investment in agriculture and a low level of mechanisation.
Others are low level technology which leads to the use of poor seeds, and low budget allocation.
Meanwhile, Monika Percic from FAO headquarters in Rome said that the project took off this month and will continue up to December 2013.
She said the project would be implemented through government support in implementing its agricultural policies.

DAILY CUP OF GREEN TEA COULD WARD OFF CANCER

Green dream: Dr Ed Okello pours himself a cup of cancer-fighting tea (Picture: PA) Green dream: Dr Ed Okello pours himself a cup of cancer-fighting tea
Drinking of cup of green tea a day could help ward off Alzheimer`s and stop cancers in their tracks, B ritish reaserchers have concluded.
The ancient Chinese remedy works to protect brain cells against deterioration and slows cancerous cell growth, they believe.
The project at Newcastle University went further than previous studies by monitoring how chemicals in green tea would affect the body once digested.
‘We found when green tea is digested by enzymes in the gut, the resulting chemicals are actually more effective against key triggers of Alzheimer’s development than the undigested form,’ said Dr Ed Okello, who led the study.
‘We also found the digested compounds had anti-cancer properties, significantly slowing down the growth of tumour cells.’
The results are a breakthrough as previously it could not be assumed the body would absorb health-boosting chemicals in certain foods.
Compounds known as polyphenols present in black and green tea possess neuro-protective properties which protect brain cells, earlier studies show.
The mix of compounds produced when these polyphenols are broken down is what Newcastle University researchers tested.
The team was able to establish for the first time if these foods are actually doing us any good.
Dr Okello said: ‘The digested chemicals protected the cells, preventing the toxins from destroying the cells. We also saw them affecting the cancer cells.
‘Green tea has been used in medicines in the Far East for thousands of years and now we are beginning to discover some of the science behind these claims.’
‘It’s fair to say that at least one cup of green tea every day may be good for you and I would certainly recommend it.’
Dr Anne Corbett, of the Alzheimer’s Society, said the study added to previous research suggesting green tea might help to reduce the risk of the disease

5 foods to help you look your best

Ageing, pollution, stress and fatigue can all take their toll on our appearance. From wrinkles to under-eye circles and eye bags to spots, the effects of our lifestyles can display themselves on our faces before we even start to feel them. Luckily, there is no need to opt for surgery just yet. By eating the right foods and paying attention to your diet, you can drastically improve your appearance. Here are our top five foods for a natural facelift.
Spinach
Spinach, like many other dark green leafy vegetables, is rich in an antioxidant called lutein. Not only is this great for healthy eyes, but more recent research has shown that it is also good for preventing wrinkles by helping to retain the skin's moisture and elasticity, increasing lipid levels and preventing damage caused by free radicals.

The benefits of spinach do not stop there, however, as the leafy vegetable also has the power to reduce dark circles under the eyes due to its high levels of vitamins K and C. Although there are many reasons behind dark circles - such as tiredness and heredity - one of the roots can be poor circulation. In cases where this is a problem, increasing your intake of vitamins K and C can alleviate them by helping to boost circulation and strengthening capillary walls.
Oysters
Besides being a well known aphrodisiac, oysters can also enhance your beauty. If you are suffering from pale, sallow skin or dark circles under your eyes, this may be due to vitamin B12 or iron deficiencies, both of which can cause anaemia. To beat pasty skin, try boosting your intake of these essential nutrients by stocking up on oysters, which have high levels of both. Other good sources include seaweed, clams and mussels.
Garlic
It may not be the most fragrant of foods, but garlic is a superfood that can have great skin benefits. As a natural antibiotic with blood cleansing, immune boosting, antibacterial properties, garlic is an effective, cheap and healthy way to help naturally treat acne. While there are many reasons people suffer from spots, garlic - particularly when eaten raw and crushed - can help reduce future breakouts, while its anti-inflammatory properties can reduce the swelling and inflammation of acne.
Avocados
Avocados often get a bad press due to their high levels of fats, however the healthy fats contained in an avocado can actually do wonders for your skin. Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, avocadoes can help to moisturise your skin from the inside and increase collagen production, helping to prevent wrinkles. The anti-inflammatory properties of avocado are also good for helping to reduce acne and psoriasis, while the high levels of vitamin E will help to keep your skin supple and prevent premature ageing.
Bananas
Many people know that fluid retention is the primary cause of belly bloating, but it can also be responsible for a puffy face and bags under the eyes. Fortunately, fluid retention can be treated through the diet by redressing the body's sodium/potassium balance. As these two minerals work against each other to balance water in the body, too little potassium - or too much salt - is one of the most common causes of water retention. Redress this by increasing your intake of potassium through foods such as bananas. Other potassium rich foods include strawberries, melon and papaya; making a fresh fruit salad a great choice for a supple, youthful face.
