Premier League 2011-12: Top 10 signings of the season

Whether it’s a club record signing or a bargain basement Bosman there is always some value to be had in the transfer market.
In the Premier League this season there have been plenty of moves with many of them proving successful for their respective clubs.
So successful that the likes of Mikel Arteta, Nikica Jelavic and Peter Crouch all miss out on our final cut as Sportsmail assesses the top 10 transfers this season.

 Yakubu

Blackburn (Free from Everton)
The Yak In the eyes of Blackburn fans, Steve Kean has not made many good decisions, but signing Yakubu has been one of them.
The striker looked to be a spent force when he only scored one goal for Everton last season before dropping into the Championship on loan at Leicester.
But since the 29-year-old’s relatively low-key move last summer he has once again become a feared marksman in the top flight.
His goals this season may not be enough to keep Blackburn in the Premier League, but without those strikes, Rovers relegation to the Championship may have been sealed in early April.

 Demba Ba

Newcastle (Free, West Ham)
Demba Ba Seven league goals in an awful West Ham team last year gave everyone a hint that Ba was the real deal in the Premier League, but very few clubs followed up on their interest to sign him this season – even on a free.
In the end Alan Pardew brought the striker to Newcastle and it’s proven to be one of the bargains of the season.
The 26-year-old scored 15 goals before leaving for the African Nations Cup in January, but despite finding the net far less often since returning, he has formed a deadly partnership with Papiss Cisse.
Newcastle's Senegalese front-men are a not a force to be messed with.

 Ashley Young

Man Utd (£16m from Aston Villa)
Ashley Young
He may have been doing his best Tom Daley impressions over the past few weeks but Young’s first season at Manchester United has been a big success.
The forward was a key component to Aston Villa last season but has taken his game further at Old Trafford and looks dangerous every time he has the ball.
Eight league goals and seven assists has seen him play a major role this term, which has seen the 26-year-old link up to great effect with Wayne Rooney for club and country as United bid to retain the Premier League title.

 Anthony Pilkington

Norwich (£2m, Huddersfield)
Anthony Pilkington
For many Premier League teams, the concept of purchasing a player from the lower leagues is starting to become taboo and too much of a gamble.
But Paul Lambert has kept faith with the stars of the Football League and arguably his best signing from last summer has been Pilkington, taking the 23-year-old two steps up from League One.
The double promotion has not fazed the midfielder at all and his tidy strike rate this season has played a big part in helping Norwich easily maintain their Premier League status.

Scott Parker

Tottenham (£5m from West Ham)
Scott Parker
With Wilson Palacios going off the boil, Spurs needed new blood to anchor their midfield, especially after thrashings form Manchester City and Manchester United at the start of the season.
Step forward Parker. After the 31-year-old joined Spurs, the club won 10 of their next 11 league games helping them become early pace-setters in the league behind City and United.
Injury and suspension have seen Spurs decline in games without Parker but the midfielder continues to rise at international level with Stuart Pearce handing him the captain’s armband for England in the recent friendly with Holland.

5. Yohan Cabaye

Newcastle (£4.3m from Lille
Yohan Cabaye
Lille conquered all before them on the way to winning the French top flight last season with the likes of Gervinho and Eden Hazard taking much of the plaudits.
But working hard in the engine room was Cabaye, who was snapped up at a bargain price by Pardew way back in June. The Frenchman has proven to be a class above since replacing former Toon skipper Kevin Nolan in the midfield.
The 26-year-old’s ability to control the flow of a game and play as a box-to-box midfielder has been a key reason why Newcastle find themselves in a battle for the Champions League places.

 Michel Vorm

Swansea (£1.5m from Utrecht)
Michel Vorm
A late addition to the Swans squad on the eve of their first Premier League season, but ever since making a strong debut against Manchester City the keeper’s stock has been on the rise.
Eye-catching saves, a number of clean sheets, and a large amount of confidence and trust from his defence has made him one of the best value-for-money transfers this term.
The 28-year-old has impressed so much for Brendan Rodgers’ side that he was given the Dutch No. 1 jersey for their final two Euro 2012 qualifying games earlier in the season. A key component in Swansea's backline.

3. Papiss Cisse

Newcastle (£10m from Freiburg)
Papiss Cisse
Many questioned Pardew’s decision to sign a striker in January who couldn’t feature until returning from the African nations Cup – but the wait has been more than worth it.
Not even Pardew could have imagined the Senegal striker would score so many goals, teaming up with Ba in a deadly attack that cost less than a third of Andy Carroll.
The 26-year-old can still hardly speak a word of English but his incredibly quick adaption to the Premier League in such a short space of time makes him one of the greatest ever January purchases. His goal of the season effort v Chelsea will be remembered for years.

2. Juan Mata

Chelsea (£23.5m from Valencia)
Juan Mata For the majority of last summer it looked like Mata was Arsenal bound, but after missing out on Luka Modric from Tottenham, Chelsea swiped the Spaniard from under the Gunners’ noses.
The price tag suggested big things from the 23-year-old and he hasn’t failed to deliver, establishing himself as a crucial playmaker to the Blues as well as chipping in with a healthy amount of goals and assists.
Even in the darkest days under Andre Villas-Boas, Mata has shined and he continues to do so under Roberto Di Matteo’s watch. For once the Blues have had value for money.

 Sergio Aguero

Man City (£38m, Atletico Madrid

Sergio Aguero
Record breaking transfers can often weigh down a player once he joins a new club, but City fans will be thankful that hasn’t been the case with Sergio Aguero.
The club record signing wasted no time to adjust to the Premier League after coming off the bench to score twice on his debut against Swansea and he hasn’t looked back since.
With 30 goals in total the Argentine has linked up well with playmaker David Silva and looks at home in attack no matter which striker he is paired with. Even at the 23-year-old’s extremely high cost, he has been worth every penny.

CHADEMA yailiza CCM
Saturday, 05 May 2012

*WAMO MAWAZIRI SABA, 10,000 WAKABIDHIWA KADI ARUSHA
Peter Saramba, Arusha

Usiwe

“Kuna kipindi kinakuja siku siyo nyingi ambapo kujiunga Chadema itakuwa dili.

Chelsea 2 Liverpool 1: Cup warrior Drogba the king of Wembley

By Rob Draper
At the end they embraced like champions, those old warriors of Chelsea, and bounced up and down in a circle like excited children in familiar fashion.
Chelsea are again FA Cup winners and a season that seemed to be disappearing into the abyss is ending in silverware.
The ultimate dream of owner Roman Abramovich may yet follow in Munich. But for now the team and, in particular Roberto di Matteo, a manager who surely deserves a title more exalted than caretaker, should glory in their remarkable turnaround.

For Chelsea, out of sorts for so long this season, this was a return to normality. They have virtually appropriated this famous old trophy in recent years with four victories since 2007.
All around records were tumbling: it was Ashley Cole’s seventh FA Cup win, Didier Drogba’s fourth FA Cup final goal and the fourth time captain John Terry has lifted that cup.
And yet Chelsea’s celebrations were infused with a degree of relief, and not just because an 82nd-minute header from Andy Carroll briefly seemed to have brought the score back to 2-2.
For more than an hour they utterly dominated before a 64th-minute goal from substitute Carroll changed everything.
Liverpool, who had been sleepwalking to defeat, were suddenly galvanised and Chelsea, previously untroubled, spent the rest of the game in survival mode. And when Carroll headed goalwards on 82 minutes, it seemed extra-time beckoned as he wheeled away in celebration. Mercifully, a goalline controversy was settled correctly, but it was still an almighty scare for Chelsea.
For Di Matteo, who twice scored goals at the old Wembley to win Chelsea the Cup, Saturday was a vindication whatever an uncertain future holds.

‘We’ve had a difficult season and a lot of criticism, but the players responded to all the adversity we’ve faced,’ he said. ‘We’ve been heavily criticised but we’ve got the trophy and have the chance for another one. It’s been difficult but the players have made the club proud.’
For Liverpool there can be only regrets. Not over that decision, but their performance. What if they had competed from the off? What if they had shown similar spirit for the opening hour? Questions manager Kenny Dalglish will no doubt have to answer when they are posed by the club’s American owners.

Ramires of Chelsea celebrates with Juan Mata and Branislav Ivanovic

‘They were excellent for the last half-hour, but the game lasts for 90 minutes,’ said Dalglish. ‘With a team of the quality of Chelsea, you can’t give them a two-goal head start. Maybe we were nervous. A lot of them were youngsters. Chelsea are thoroughbreds who’ve been through the course before us. We cannot lose two goals in the fashion we did and expect to walk away winning.’
The first goal defined the game. Juan Mata, whose slightest movement can quicken the heart, was given an unforgiveable amount of space and his delivery to Ramires was immaculate. The Brazilian shrugged off the inadequate challenge of Jose Enrique, Daniel Agger chased in desperation and Ramires shot past Pepe Reina. It was a soft goal. Always underdogs, Liverpool’s task was now considerably harder.

Other than a Craig Bellamy strike blocked by Branislav Ivanovic, there was nothing. Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel were the midfield alpha males, although there was a brief show of spirit from  Liverpool after half-time. Their hopes lasted a mere seven minutes.
On 52 minutes Lampard skipped past Jay Spearing, who had an educational afternoon, and drove the ball into Drogba, who instinctively headed goalwards. With Martin  Skrtel closing him down, the Ivorian drove the ball through his legs into the far corner. Salomon Kalou, Lampard and Drogba then went close and for Liverpool it seemed over.

Carroll came on shortly after the second but it seemed desperate, before a single moment transformed the occasion. Jose Bosingwa dwelt inexplicably on the ball as Stewart Downing robbed him and crossed for Carroll. Panic ensued, as Carroll turned Terry one way, then the other, before driving into the net.
Wembley was suddenly alive, as were Liverpool. While not quite Istanbul, something remarkable transpired. Liverpool, led by  Carroll, were a compelling force. Steven Gerrard wrestled the midfield from Lampard and played in Glen Johnson, who put Luis Suarez into the box.

The Uruguayan dinked a magnificent ball on to the head of Carroll, who met it four yards out and raced away prematurely in celebration. Petr Cech had got a touch to divert it on to the bar. Briefly, it seemed as if the ball had crossed the line and assistant Andy Garratt was besieged, but he held firm and rightly so.
Terry was required to block a  Carroll strike in injury-time as  Liverpool were roared on to the end. But the moment had passed.  Chelsea had survived. And for now those old warriors can celebrate, whatever the future holds.
